Adding History to Offices

Oakland, CA

  • Year Built: 2021

The owners wanted to redesign their law office to recreate a “Chicago Loft” style consistent with the building’s 1922 construction. The layout stayed the same, with new elements layered in.

    • We removed maple wood details and replaced them with period-correct Douglas Fir, and refinished the Fir flooring that reveals some of its history.

    • Previous built-in cabinetry and desks made way for custom cabinets with a traditional feel at many of the common areas including the Conference Room.

    • We installed tin ceilings that add traditional character while bouncing natural light from the large windows further into the offices. They also improve acoustics and hide new insulation.

    • We replaced Office and Conference Room carpet with high-quality wool carpet.

    • The Bathrooms, not shown, got glow-ups with traditional mosaic tile flooring.

    • We added or replaced lighting throughout the office for better function, energy efficiency and aesthetics.
