Back Yard ADU

Berkeley, CA

  • Year Built: 2021

    This 389 SF ADU was converted from a former detached Garage and originally conceived as an Office but morphed into a full living unit.

    • A level entry and front deck create easy access and expand the living space.

    • New double French doors provide more light and ease of access. We added three skylights and two large windows facing the yard to brighten the space further. (The building sits on the side property line so we had to be careful about fire safety and privacy.)

    • Additionally, the vaulted ceiling helps to make it feel more spacious.

    • It features Levitch built Shaker cabinetry at the compact yet fully functional Kitchen.

    • An open living area creates a flexible arrangement.

    • Colors are neutral and ready for an occupant or guest to put their stamp on the space. Exposed paralam (parallel strand lumber) beams and collar ties add architectural interest while strengthening the structure, wood tone flooring is warm and practical, and a black and white Bath round out the finishes.
