Lighthearted Bungalow Addition

Berkeley, CA

  • Year Built: 2017

This Kitchen and Family Room addition has cabinetry, pops of color, and natural light that provide a glow throughout the remodeled home. The 1300 SF, 2-Bedroom, 1 Bath home with an Office needed more space and functionality for a couple with young children. In the beginning, we explored options to remodel and repair some areas. However, the final design includes an addition and relocated and remodeled Bedrooms, Bathrooms and Laundry, new Kitchen and Family Room.

    Kitchen and Family Room Addition:

An addition at the right side of the home accommodates the new Kitchen, which moved from the left side of the home, and Family Room.

Consistent style unites the two adjacent spaces. Pops of turquoise in the accent tile at the range and paint on the Kitchen island as well as at the Family Room offer fun as well as function. Secondly, the rooms feature vaulted ceilings with skylights and plenty of doors and windows for plenty of natural light.

The Dining and Bedroom swapped places to keep the Dining Room adjacent to the new Kitchen and Family Room, with a nice flow through to the Living Room also.

We matched the original horizontal siding at the addition.

    Office:

The Office moved from the back corner to the front of the home.

    Bedrooms and Bathrooms:

A new Primary Suite with a Bedroom and Bathroom at the rear of the home became possible with the relocation of the Office to the front of the home.

A new Hall Bathroom toward the center rear and close to the existing Bathroom serves the main home and two Bedrooms.

Fresh colors and patterns extend into the new Bathrooms too.

Playful floor tiles in the Primary Bathroom and a chevron tile pattern in the Hall Bathroom enliven these spaces. Wall colors and decorative items round out the colorful accents.

    Back Deck:

With the additional square space at the back of the home, we created a new Deck leading into the yard for easier access and more outdoor space.

This is a warm, comfortable, lighthearted family home that doesn’t take itself too seriously.
