Helping a Berkeley Homeowner with Rebuilding Together

For Rebuilding Together’s annual National Rebuilding Day, Levitch organized work and a team of volunteers to help a neighbor with some projects at her home. Our homeowner this year, Maria, is older with back issues and has lived in Berkeley since the 1970s. Several of her children work for the City of Berkeley and our Foreman, Manuel Valentin, had played soccer with one of them.

We had 8 Levitch and family members on our crew, for whom the homeowner generously cooked lunch. Our subcontractor, Jose Carillo of Carillo’s Iron Works, donated labor for a safety railing at her front yard. Other safety upgrades included rebuilding stairs and a handrail at the back porch, adding a motion sensor for security lights, new LED lamps at the interior and exterior, and installing a seismic safety shutoff valve for the gas line. We also installed new dryer vent ducting, which involved drilling through tile and rerouting the ducting through the crawlspace.
